Language Barrier
I answered an ad the other day on craigslist - Yes sometimes I sink so low as to check it out.
The Ad read :
I NEED A WEBSITE!!!
I have a small company and i need a web site.
nothing to expencive
since its new, only 2years old and i want to see how well of a response i get before investing for a real site.
please contact with price, contact info, and if you will make the site or if you have a website creator i pay for.
Thanks!!
I thought "I can do that" so I fired off an email:
Hi,
Saw your ad, what is it you are after ? I dont do flash but can knock you up a website tailored to meet your price.
let me know if you are interested.
My portfolio can be found here http://www.pixelsbypixie.com/
I thought it was short, friendly and to the point, as they hadn't given much to go on there was little else I could write.
The next morning I got this email:
"knock me up a website", what in the hell does that mean?
you expect me to work with you in a professional environment with language like that?
:0 That was it nothing more, a little taken aback I sent an apology and the excuse that I was English and that is quite a common phrase.I wished him luck with his search for a "cheap web designer"
Knock Up* = Like Whip up, not to be confused with "knocked up"
*I don't even know why I wrote it because I never say it in "real life" ?
I never heard back from Mr Jose Jones....
Thinking about it later though I regretted apologising...
- Firstly looking at his Ad it doesn't exactly cry out professional either.
- Secondly who is he to pick faults when he has no Capital "I's" and ends with the line "i pay for" ? As well as using the wrong "to" and spelling expensive wrong to-boot.
- Thirdly if you want a professional don't post you cheapskate Ad on craigslist!! Why not put your hand in your pocket and pay for an Ad or even search the INTERNET for web design companies, its not like they are few and far between.
